This offices beginngs are surrounded in mystery. I have been told this office was originally intended to be an opertator and billing site but during the final stage of construction, disgruntled Bell Atlantic customer came by and shot out the windows. This prompted management to move operators and billing to Hampton and conver this office into a local switch. However, this office has a corner stone dated 1958 which makes the story somewhat suspect.

That being said, this office has a very large rear extension not visible in this picture. Also out of frame is an active AT&T microwave tower microwave tower that doubles as a point of presence for the peninsula (in conjunction with POPs in Hampton, Lightfoot ((James City County) and Charles City County). Additionally, there was a GTE Sprint microwave site (the predessesor to Sprint) near by.
