Comments:
Located at what was once the seat for Princess Anne County this CO has bucked
the traditional 70s style architecture inflicted on most traditional GTE COs.
The only other office as "stately" or distinctive would be the CO in Smithfield.
This departure in design is most likely due to the buildings original owners,
a company called First Colony Telephone Company. The only trace one can find of
FCTC are several yellow and black rusted and faded cable markers on the north
bound side of Princess Anne Road. Similar traces are all that can be found of
the Tidewater Telephone Company on Virginia's middle peninsula. Sadly the lack
of shoulder and presence of deep ditches prevents the taking of any pictures of
the markers. It was daunting to even slow down enough to try and read the signs
on this speedy two lane road.
If you know of more information on the First Colony Telephone Company or where some of their surviving cable markers might be please drop the staff a line!
Despite the offices location in the center of Virginia Beach's administrative offices it is really a remote of the more mundane looking Shipps Corner office a bit further north.
